Sailing espresso from Nicaragua is a fair trade originating coffee from the Boaco department in the central highlands of Nicaragua.
Unlike usual, he did not reach Germany by container ship: he crossed the ocean by sailing freighter. The Avontuur, built in 1920, is the symbol of a movement that not only shows the immense amount of pollutant emissions caused by the wide separation of production site and sales location, but also offers the solution through low-emission transport. Because what we do today determines how we live tomorrow: container ships are by far the biggest polluters in the transport sector and with the Sailing Espresso we want to show that other, climate-friendly transport is possible.
The organic raw coffee comes from the cooperative association Tierra Nueva in Nicaragua. Around 250 smallholders have joined forces to form the association in order to jointly market their harvest and improve living conditions in the countryside. At an altitude of between 700 and 1,200 meters, they cultivate coffee, ginger and turmeric, among other things, on small plots in mixed cultures.
Tierra Nueva is Café Chavalo's most important trading partner in Nicaragua and is itself a member of the cooperative in Germany. The small farmers in Nicaragua can thus have a say in the general assembly on important issues relating to Café Chavalo eG in Germany. World trade is also possible beyond profit maximization and elbow mentality. That's what Café Chavalo believes in, and that's what our partners at Tierra Nueva in Nicaragua believe in. We are committed to an economy based on solidarity that serves the well-being of everyone involved and treats our environment responsibly.
